Public Lecture Series - Marc Bekoff, Ph.D.

The Detroit Zoological Society will host a presentation by Marc Bekoff, Ph.D., on Friday, May 5, 2017, at 7:15 p.m. at the Detroit Zoo’s Ford Education Center, followed by a book signing. Dr. Bekoff’s presentation is titled, “The Animal’s Agenda: Freedom, Compassion for Individuals, and Reform”.

He will share how a large number of people who claim to work on behalf of nonhuman animals rely on the science of animal welfare for guidance as to what types of treatment are permissible and those that are not. However, animal welfare science, while offsetting some of the worst aspects of animal suffering, falls far short of promoting true animal well-being and freedom with a focus on individual animals. The science of animal well-being, compassionate conservation, and personal rewilding offer viable solutions for coming to the rescue of other animals. Dr. Bekoff says the time is long overdue to use what we know about the fascinating and diverse inner lives of other animals on their behalf.

Copies of Dr. Bekoff’s books, “The Animals’ Agenda: Freedom, Compassion, and Coexistence in the Human Age”, “Rewilding Our Hearts” and “Why Dogs Hump and Bees Get Depressed” will be available for purchase.

Dr. Bekoff’s presentation is open to the public; however, due to limited seating, tickets must be reserved in advance. All proceeds will benefit the Detroit Zoological Society’s Center for Zoo Animal Welfare.
